We’ve been in business for about six years, since 2018. It’s just my husband, Chris, and I here at the store. Chris was a painter for over 20 years, and we have a long history of flipping houses and being in the remodeling world. Benjamin Moore was always our paint brand of choice. My husband’s uncle Max, who inspired the name "ColorMaxx," was part of the store as a silent partner. Max has a specialty finishes business selling coatings to cabinet and furniture makers, and Benjamin Moore was encouraging him to open a retail store in Carlisle, PA. Max had broached the idea with Chris, but it wasn’t until Chris was injured during a painting job that he reconsidered the store concept and thought about his next chapter in life. I was working an office job at the time, doing payables. When my job got outsourced, the pieces fell into place, and we decided to open ColorMaxx.
Over the last six years, we’ve used three different POS systems, which is crazy! The first system we chose was the same one Max’s business was already using. It was an awesome accounting system, but the retail side of things was complicated and slow, which made for a poor customer experience. We heard about Epicor through Benjamin Moore and decided to give it a try in late 2022. After only a few months with Epicor, Max and Tyler stopped by our store to learn about our current system. They also wanted to share what Rundoo was like. Even though we were not happy with the system we’d just switched to, we weren’t really interested since we had just completed a conversion. The process of switching to another system was scary, not knowing if it would be an improvement.
Max was very knowledgeable and helpful, answering all of my questions with the right answers. Anything I wanted from a POS, Rundoo was able to provide. After leaving, Max followed up with more information. He even set up a test environment with our data, no strings attached, and allowed me to explore the system and see how our business data looked in Rundoo. That experience is what really convinced me. Any questions I had while trying out the system, they addressed immediately. I noticed many improvements with Rundoo. First, our previous POS had a clunky payment experience that would often auto-kick us out, meaning the customer had to pull their card out again. While this might seem like a small issue, it really mattered when there were several customers in line. Looking things up in our other POS was complicated, too, unless you knew exactly what you were looking for. Additionally, the training to set up the system and transfer information from the first system felt unsupported. On the other hand, Rundoo gave me a demo environment, walked me through everything, and offered key features such as improved card processing, strong search capabilities, and a contractor app.
Between the smooth trial experience and knowing they would find a solution for the current POS contract, as well as that I would not be locked into a new contract with Rundoo, my mind was put at ease. It also didn’t hurt that I was working with a "Max" as well. When we signed and asked how long it would take to go live, they said it could happen as quickly or slowly as we wanted. It happened really quickly, which was both scary and exciting.
What’s been great about Rundoo is how easy it is for anyone to learn. They have helpful Rundocs guides, and even without those directions, we tried to do what we thought was possible in the system, and it worked! The system is very intuitive and user-friendly. We knew we loved it as soon as we went live. The customer-facing experience was so easy, and even our customers started commenting on the look and reliability of the card machines. Having the app for contractors has been incredibly useful. They tend to make payments faster due to the convenience of paying through their phones.
We appreciate the ability to share product feedback on the Ideas Board. It’s easy to submit and track those ideas, and we've seen positive changes come to life, such as improved navigation bar features and receipt printer updates. We know there are many more improvements in the works, and we look forward to those changes. Rundoo continues to improve with each update. We are extremely pleased with our decision to switch to Rundoo.
